Great Hopes And Expectations About Our Baby Girl
It was during the early months of 1987. I got married to a girl in the west bank of Vembanad lake in the “Venice of the East”. She was hardly 22 years old and I had just turned 29.
By the 3rd month of our marriage, she showed signs of pregnancy. At first she got terrifically angry with me making me accountable for such an early pregnancy. Our doctor consoled her saying that a child who is born while the mother is younger stands the best chance for turning into a healthy baby. She turned out to be happy hearing this. In fact, after that day, she started planning ahead – from what maternity jeans and other clothing to buy, to redecorating one of our rooms to prepare for the baby.
However, one day my wife complained that she can’t feel the baby moving. The doctor probed gently around my wife’s extended stomach, and it started moving. Then I made a stethoscope from small Vicks vaporob tin, tubes and wires (yes, I’m a bit of a mad inventor!). Every time my wife wanted reassurance, she was happy to hear the heartbeat of the child.
I used to keep the headphone speakers of my Walkman on her stomach and play beautiful melodies. The child started jumping inside the stomach when she started recognizing her favorite music. At the sixth month of pregnancy, the doctor confirmed that the child is a girl. Exactly after 9 months of pregnancy, she was born, and we were delighted to see her when the nurse brought her out of the operation theater. A chubby white child with her eyes wide open to see the world. I called her “Baby” and she responded with a sound. She is completing her university studies now and is very smart and clever.
