How To Get Fine Detail In Large Areas Of Water Colour Washes
When painting a detailed object in broad washes of colour the best way to keep the painting looking fresh and the washes spontaneous is with making fluid. This is a latex fluid that can be brushed onto your water colour paper over the area that will have the detailed object. After this is dry you’re free to apply sweeping washes of colour across the page without putting colour onto the area for the detailed work. Once the washes are dry the latex can be rubbed off to reveal the clean paper, ready for whatever you have in mind.
This technique is particularly good for seascapes, beaches or for instance a simple wash effect behind a detailed pet portraits. Fine details that require a light tone are also especially good for this technique, ropes and pebbles that would normally hamper a wide sweeping brush mark can easily be touched in later.
