An Unforgettable Houston Lawyer
I had a patient, who was a once a popular Houston lawyer, in the nursing home who had Alzheimer’s disease. He was a respected divorce lawyer in Houston for 30 years before he retired. He had a very strong and loving relationship with his wife, to the point that his life revolved around her and their family. After her death, his condition worsened. He was placed in the nursing home because no one was going to take care of him.
While in the nursing home, he kept looking for his wife and behaved like a child. He cried most of the time and complained about anything or everything he saw. All he did the whole day was act as one of the Houston attorneys in a court trial. He exhibited irritability, aggression, and mood swings. Many nurses wondered why he behaved so well whenever I was around. I was told by his nephew that I looked like my patient’s wife when she was young.
I was drawn to him because I felt for his loss. I took care of him, talked to him, and treated him as if he was a normal person. His condition worsened and it led to his death. He just slept and never woke up. I was the last person he talked to and his last words were “thank you” before he slept. I cried when he didn’t wake up the next day. He’s one of the best patients I had and I’ll never forget him.
