The Interesting Side of Adjectives and Adverbs

Here’s a challenge: try to think of something clever to say about adjectives and adverbs. If you’re like most people, you’ll probably stare at your computer screen for a few minutes and then give up. There’s just no hiding the fact that adjectives and adverbs are not all that interesting. But it doesn’t have to be this way! The truth is, using adjectives and adverbs can be challenging and even interesting if you make the effort. For example, consider the sentence “I took the highway to the mountains.” Not very interesting, is it? But how about adding a couple adjectives and an adverb to spice it up: “I hesitantly took the icy highway to the snow-capped mountains.” Instead of just stating a simple fact, you’ve now added the element of danger and fright to the meaning of the sentence.
